When do we use a resume? When applying for a job or internship When completing college applications When networking in an industry / field of interest
What does a resume consist of? Personal Information (Name, address, email, phone) Objective A statement that clearly states the type of job you are looking for and what you can provide/ can do for the company / org if hired Education Experience Extracurricular activities (volunteer work, internships, mentorships, etc.) Skills & Awards References
Contact Information Probably the most important information If the employer cannot reach you, then how will you get a job? First and Last Name Address Use correct grammar, capitalization, spelling and punctuation Home / Cell number Make sure this is correct Vital information Professional email Professional email: AlexRincon@gmail.com Unprofessional email: Likestoskate@gmail.com Make sure to hyperlink your email
Objective Statement (optional) Having a statement to clearly define what you would like to accomplish with the position being offered is a good idea to have But not necessary You can put: To gain valuable work experience in [field you are interested in] Learn how to specify when it is for a particular job Be concise / specific
Education Full name of your school Manual Arts Senior High School Dates attended and your expected graduation GPA If it’s below 3.0, you will be able to display other strengths that you have later on the resume The Career Emphasis / theme of the school School of the Arts School of Business School of Science / Technology/Engineering/ mathematics Any courses that are relatable to the job being offered Honors and AP courses
Experience This will be an important part of your resume Include paid work, volunteering, caring for family, internships, mentorships, school clubs We suggest: Create a list of everything you’ve ever been a part of during high school Paid work, volunteering, caring for family, interning, organizations, church activities, community service, clubs, etc. After you create this list, separate “experiences” from “extracurricular activities”, and special skills you have or developed The top 2-3 activities you have listed should be placed in your experience section
Experience What if I don't have any extracurricular activities? Have you baby sat before? Cared for a family member, help out small business? If you don't have anything You NEED to take advantage of the opportunities available to you (hint: go to the College Center for more info!) Volunteer at an organization or church
Experience Entries that you have are the ones you will talk about the most to employer Entries must include Organization name, dates you were active, your job title Notes on your main responsibilities, projects, tasks, skills developed, or accomplishments 2-3 lines Use Action verbs to start each one liner (ex: “Responsible for…”, “Managed…”) Best to highlight skills and experience and how they will contribute to new workplace
Extracurricular Activities Entries that you have are the ones you will talk about the most to employer Entries must include Organization name, dates you were active, your job title Notes on your main responsibilities, projects, tasks, skills developed, or accomplishments 2-3 lines Use powerful verbs to start each one liner (ex: “Responsible for…”, “Managed…”) Best to highlight skills and experience and how they will contribute to new workplace
Skills & Awards Skills should be related to language and technical skills This should be displayed by your roles in your previous experiences What not to say: “good listener”, “helpful”, “respectful” While these are great traits, think more about technical skills Ex: Bilingual in English and Spanish Ex: Proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator You can choose to highlight any award or recognition you’ve received (optional) Ex. Perfect attendance, dean’s list, honor roll List the name and date received Give a brief description of what the award is
References Most employers ask for references to contact so you need to have this on your resume What not to say: “Available upon request” Why? Because you don’t want to have your potential employer to have to go back and ask you This can be a teacher, counselor, former employer, mentor, coach Not your friends, or family members Need to be able to speak to your professional and academic abilities Include your references’ name, email, phone number, title, and organization Always ask before you use them as a reference
