Calculating your GPA Example: Totals Points= 12.5 Total Classes= 4 12.5/4= 3.12 GPA Classes Final Grade Quality Points Honors English I 86 3.5 World History 98 4 Math I 75 2 Health/PE 87 3 *Add your quality points for each grade, then divide by how many grades you included
2 Types of GPA’s Weighted Unweighted Includes the extra quality points from honors and AP courses Colleges generally look at weighted GPA’s Does not include the extra quality points from honors and AP courses. This means all A’s =4 B’s= 3 …..and so on. *Honors and AP courses help to increase your GPA and make you more impressive to colleges! These courses can help balance out courses you are less successful in.
NHS Example Transcript: *A transcript shows what classes you have taken along with the grades and credits you earned from those classes. It also shows your GPA and class rank. *Colleges/future employees after high school will look at these to see what kind of student you are.
What do Colleges look for in an applicant? High School Diploma GPA- They prefer to see at least a 3.0 (minimum GPA depends upon the college) Class rank (how you compare to others at your school) Honors/AP classes- Did you challenge yourself and work to your highest potential? UNC colleges require a 2 credit minimum of a language. Both credits much be in the same language. Behavior- has the student been suspended or arrested? If so, why? Recommendation letters- Don’t burn your bridges with teachers, staff, employers etc!
