Supporting Details What are they?

What are Supporting Details? Supporting details are reasons, examples, facts, or other kinds of evidence that explain the main idea A Main Idea is supported by supporting details

A Paragraph with Strong Support Strong support can complete a basic outline that shows three major details supporting the main idea.

Understanding Major and Minor Details There are often Two major types of supporting details Major Detail- explains and develops the main idea Minor Detail- helps fill out and make clear the major details

The writer uses details to make the story clearer. Major Details – Describes the Main Ideas with important information Minor Details – adds information to the major details The writer uses details to make the story clearer.

Hints Look for the sentences with lots of words! (details) List words help identify details and the writer’s ideas
