INTERSPECIFIC RELATIONSHIPS

These you should know already Competition: The simultaneous demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources eg. Nutrients, living space, light Mutualism: The feeding relationship where both species benefit shrimp

Exploitation: A relationship between two species where one benefits and one is harmed. Herbivory: The eating of plant matter by animals

Predation: The term given to the relationship between predator and prey Predator: The term given to an organism that hunts and kills its food Prey: The term given to an animal that is eaten by the predator

Predation avoidance: Prey species may try to deter predators using: A startle display – to look as big as possible

Display behaviour of startled praying mantis

Poison (and warning colours)

PREDATION TOOLS Predators use a variety of strategies to get prey. Concealment Traps

Parasitism: The term for the relationship between a host and a parasite. Parasite: An organism that lives in or on its host to the detriment of the host. Host: The term given to an organism that has a parasite

The Guinea Worm

Mimicry This is another predator avoidance strategy. Moth A Caterpillar

Mimicry Batesian mimicry: one poisonous - the other is harmless bee hoverfly

: Mullerian mimicry both species share the same warning
