The Pacific Campaign The Bombing of Japan The US had gone back to high-altitude, unescorted, daylight precision bombing and it didn’t work. The air bases in the Mariana islands were over 1500 miles from Japan – well out of the range of fighters – capture of Iwo Jima was key – (750 miles away)
