Six sexual rights The right to grow up The right to know The right to be sexual and to make and break relationships The right not to be at the mercy of the individual sexual attitudes of care providers or other people The right not to be sexually abused The right to humane and dignified environments Get definition from delegates first.

Sex vs Sexualty When we talk about the rights of people with learning disabilities to express their sexuality, we need to remember that it’s not about the sexual act – it’s about enabling people to be who they are, without fear of discrimination or abuse What tools do we have in place to:- Plan Monitor Review Induction process Probationary review 1 to 1 and appraisal Catch-up meetings Objectives Work place observations Feedback

Relationships & Friendships Relationships and friendships are the connection we have with a range of people, including families, friends, acquaintances, colleagues and partners. There is a growing body of evidence that suggest people with strong social networks lead healthier and happier lives

Disability Discrimination Act 1995 Sex and the law The Human Rights Act 1998 Mental Capacity Act 2005 Disability Discrimination Act 1995 Local Government Act 1988 – Repeal of Section28 (2003) Abortion Act 1967 Sexual Offences Act 2003 Equality Act 2012 Split into two or three groups. Remember to discuss cost benefits. How will they recognise good performance (What you see, hear – what they do) How will you recognise poor performance? (What you see, hear – what they do, feedback at 1-2-1’s) What tools/measures can you use to establish the standards required? Role profile; Policy and procedures; Values of organisation; People Charter; Code of conduct; Service returns; CQC reports; Professional codes of conduct; Skills for Care codes of conduct; Own standards; Probation review; Training courses; Business plan; Meds assessment; Risk assessments etc etc

Duty of Care Getting the balance right Duty to protect Duty to protect rights Discuss curve chart – Performance vs demands placed on individuals! Boredom – New starters, existing staff – Why? Engaged – How can you do this? Overload – Why might this happen? - Giving them more responsibility because they are doing well!

Values vs Practice Staff are often seen in a position of authority and some individuals they support will often try and please the staff that support them. As professionals we must strive to support the individual to make informed choices about their lives, whilst recognising the danger of imposing our own views. Discuss curve chart – Performance vs demands placed on individuals! Boredom – New starters, existing staff – Why? Engaged – How can you do this? Overload – Why might this happen? - Giving them more responsibility because they are doing well!
