A child’s brain grows to 90% of its full size by age five. Why We Do It Early Literacy Matters A child’s brain grows to 90% of its full size by age five. Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to literacy acquisition. Children raised in homes with 25 books or more pursue 3 years more of school than children from bookless homes. Imagination Library is a monthly reminder to spend time reading to a child. 80% Age 3 90% Age 5 Brain Development Meta- analysis pdf

Program Impacts

Early Literacy Matters Reading Aloud Builds Early Literacy and Improves Listening Skills Develop phonemic awareness Vocabulary, comprehension, concentration, memory and curiosity Of all the activities considered possibly helpful for the acquisition of literacy, only one—listening to stories—was significantly associated with later test scores. Children entering kindergarten with basic reading skills are three to four times more likely to graduate from high school.

Research Impacts on kindergarten readiness on IL participants vs. non-IL participants IL participants outscored their peers in every section of the kindergarten survey-reading, speaking, thinking, and social skills.
