Mental Health - #okaytosay You might have seen that Prince William and Prince Harry are leading on a campaign around mental health – using the hashtag #okaytosay. They feel it is important to be able to talk about what is going on for ourselves and how we are feeling. Prince Harry has revealed that he needed some extra support when his mum, Lady Diana, passed away and that needing that support is ok.

Wellbeing involves both your mind and your body. What Is ? Wellbeing involves both your mind and your body. Wellbeing is about living in a healthy way that is positive for you and for others around you. So what is wellbeing? It involves your mental health as well as your physical health. It’s about living in a healthy way that is positive for you and others around you.

Basically…

What is Good Mental Health? Just like we work out and try to keep fit, we also need to give our minds a work out and make sure we’re emotionally healthy as well as physically healthy. Having good emotional health and wellbeing does not mean never experiencing difficult feelings or situations. It means feeling able to tackle those hard times and be resilient.

So What’s Emotional health? Our wellbeing is more than just feeling happy; it is about being emotionally healthy: feelings of contentment, enjoyment, confidence, self-worth, choice, engagement with the world around you All these add up to an overall positive feeling of wellbeing. What about our emotional health?? It’s more than just feeling happy. It’s about...... (read slide) All of this adds up to an overall feeling of emotional health.

Good mental health is different for every body… Let’s ask our teachers how they might feel in different situations… Mental health and wellbeing can take many different forms, but it generally means “feeling good and functioning well”. This can be different for everybody.

How does this make you feel? Mr Naisbitt persuades you to take part in a 10k charity race at the weekend. How does this make you feel? Staff hold up the #helloyellow signs

There’s only 84 days ‘til Christmas! How does this make you feel?

Someone has fallen sick in Annie and you need to sing the solo to open the show. How does this make you feel?

In order to continue working at Oakwood, you need to take your Maths GCSE again. How does this make you feel?

Mrs Harden’s glue sticks have gone missing and she suspects you stole them. How does this make you feel?

These teachers reacted differently to these different situations because…we are all different people and we handle situations differently! What might be a walk in the park for one person, might be a huge challenge for others. In order to face life’s difficult situations, we need to have good mental health and wellbeing.

Believe it or not, we were teenagers once too! We’ve all been there. Believe it or not, we were teenagers once too! It is definitely not easy being a teenager. Sometimes it is hard to avoid feeling stressed, and pressure can build up in many areas of life (socially, in school, at home and then making big decisions) Worrying about these pressures is normal. Mental health is unfortunately only thought about when there are problems.

Being a teenager Stormzy on Depression This guys sound effects are on point, but he does have some useful things to say.

Why is Mental Health Important? Just like your physical health, your mental health needs to be well looked after. It affects your relationships with others It affects how you learn, including; How well you concentrate, How well you behave in the classroom; Your ability to express yourself/communicate Your ability to organise. For example, when you have a cold- you treat it with medicine and self care. We need to get into the habit of doing this with our mental health too. Within the 5Rs, we talk about resilience, that we demonstrated resilience and receive positive behaviour points for this. But what does it actually mean? Resilience means that you have an ability to bounce back from stresses that you face. Resilience is about how we deal with those worriers. Resilience is important because it plays a part in achieving good mental health and wellbeing.

How could you treat these symptoms? Cold, runny nose, cough, tiredness Bed early, stay warm, lots of hot tea and soup You wouldn’t ignore them or just hope they would magically go away. You’d treat them and make sure they got better. Bandages, professional help, rest Sore arm, muscle, joints, sprain, broken bones

So how would you treat your mental health? Speak to friends Go for a walk Arrange an activity Reflect Be thankful for what you have Get outside Exercise Do something new! Do more of what you love Give to others; time, advice or just being there.

What if you’re not feeling ok? You’re worried about your own wellbeing? You’re worried about your friends...? STILL is Rotherham’s very own campaign encouraging all young people to stop, listen and reach out to friends who may be experiencing a mental health problem.

The STILL Campaign-how can we look out for our friends? STOP – take time to think about how your friends are feeling THINK – have you noticed that a friend is not joining in? Are they spending more time alone? Has their mood or behaviour changed? Has their appearance changed? Are you worried about them? INTEREST – Reach out. We can all look out for each other and make time to ask someone how they are feeling and show them that we care. Talk to them. LISTEN – When a friend talks, listen, don’t judge. You may not have the answers but you may be able to get them to talk to an adult. You can tell an adult if you are worried. LIVE life – To help enjoy life, follow the 5 steps to wellbeing.

#oktosay Many celebrities are standing out and using their influence on young people to talk about good mental health. In his song, First Things First Stormzy talks about his battle with depression and with his interview on C4 his biggest message was to tell people who suffer with mental illness that they’re not alone. #itsoktotalk is a campaign which we as a school are going to take part in.

#helloyellow We’re going to run a special event on World Mental Health Day (10th of October) Everyone can take part and it’s absolutely free We invite you to wear something yellow to show your awareness of Mental Health and show your support

#helloyellow

You must: Be in full school uniform apart from your chosen item of yellow Anyone who wears an item that is non-school uniform but it isn’t yellow will get the normal punishment You must bring your blazer and wear it around the school over the top of your yellow item

#oktosay On the day there will be a selfie opportunity for students to leave lesson and have their photograph taken by A Public Health expert In addition to this we are going to have the local press come in and talk to us about Mental Health and why we are supporting this cause! As if that wasn’t enough we will also be holding a minute of STILLness on the day to support Rotherham’s STILL campaign. We want everyone to get involved with this day and show that you think it’s #okaytosay if you are struggling with Mental Health.

Remember…#okaytosay Talk to people if you feel you are not okay. Know who you can talk to; friends, family, teachers, PLT, ARC. Look out for your friends Find information on the internet www.mymindmatters.org.uk
