Representation of the Great Lakes in CRCM5 using 3D ocean model NEMO: impacts on simulated climate Huziy O and Sushama L

Experiment setup Simulation period: 1979–2010 Analysis period: 1990–2010 Time step: 5 min Horizontal resolution: 0.1° Domain size: 440 by 210 2 model configurations: Great Lakes (GL) using Hostetler (1D) model GL using NEMO (3D) model Driving data: ERA-Interim at 0.75° resolution

Analysis plan Validate precipitation, Tmin and Tmax with the Hopkinson-based observation dataset, compare biases in the cases of the NEMO and Hostetler simulated Great Lakes. Study impact of the changed lake model on the vertical structure of the atmospheric column: temperature and humidity profiles, boundary layer height. Analyze changes to simulated snowfall and liquid precipitation Analyze impacts on lake-effect snowfall

Output variables Air temperature, humidity and winds on pressure levels Temperature and humidity tendencies Radiative fluxes Streamflow, runoff Lake ice depth, lake temperature
