Summary Celiac disease is an immune reaction to eating gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.) requires a medical diagnosis Over time, the immune reaction to eating gluten creates inflammation that damages the small intestine's lining. It also prevents absorption of some nutrients (malabsorption). When people with celiac disease eat gluten, their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine. These attacks lead to damage on the villi, (small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine, that promote nutrient absorption) When the villi get damaged, nutrients cannot be absorbed properly into the body. celiac disease is hereditary (runs in families) people with a first-degree relative with celiac disease (parent, child, sibling) have a 1 in 10 risk of developing celiac disease

Causes Normally, the body's immune system is designed to protect it from foreign invaders. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system forms antibodies to gluten which then attack the intestinal lining. This causes inflammation in the intestines and damages the villi, the hair-like structures on the lining of the small intestine. Nutrients from food are normally absorbed by the villi. If the villi are damaged, the person cannot absorb nutrients properly and ends up malnourished, no matter how much he or she eats.

Foods containing gluten pasta breads crackers baked goods (cookies, cake, pies, and brownies) breakfast foods (cereal, granola, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles) Beers (has wheat in it)

Foods you should eat if gluten free fruits vegetables meat and poultry fish and seafood beans and nuts gluten free carbs

Fun facts In children, malabsorption can affect growth and development. Other names for celiac disease are coeliac disease, celiac sprue, gluten enteropathy. Effects 1 in every 100 American May have to have an endoscopy(views digestive tract) to determine if you have celiac, they look for villous atrophy to diagnose it.
