-The Rights Guy -Social Contract John Locke Ideas in Declaration of Independence & the U.S. Constitution Theory of Social Contract gave the colonists the idea that the powers of government were based on their own consent (permission). This theory influenced the American Revolution. Social Contract: Community agrees to obey ruler; ruler agrees to protect the community and individual rights. If the ruler does not protect rights the community can change or get rid of the ruler or government. Natural Law/Natural Rights: Guarantees the basic rights of life, liberty, and property. Keeps one Branch from ever being too powerful and taking too much control. The other two branches can stop the third branch if it tries to be too powerful. TIMELINE
