British values assembly - week beginning 28 November 2016

As a country, what do we value?

What are ‘British values’?

Freedom Respect and tolerance The rule of law Democracy

Understanding these values is essential to being a good Nobelian

So, listen carefully because there is going to be a test at the end of this assembly

Freedom ‘the power to act, speak or think for yourself, without external constraints’

Now, freedom is therefore essential in a civilised society – but if we value our freedom we must respect the right of others to be free as well.

Tolerance ‘a fair and accepting attitude toward those whose gender, sexuality, race, religion or nationality, is different to our own’

So we are free to be who we want to be and we respect the right of others to do the same. Sometimes, we may not like the views of others but…

…so long as the actions of others are legal, then we must respect and tolerate those views. We do not tolerate robbery, murder or terrorism because…

…these actions break the law and it is essential to British values that we respect the The rule of law

But where do these laws come from in the first place? All laws in Britain come from Parliament

What is Parliament? A place where our elected MPs meet to make decisions

Who is the elected MP for Stevenage? Stephen McPartland Democracy

Freedom Respect and tolerance The rule of law Democracy

Here comes the test…

Tolerance Freedom Rule of law Democracy

These British values are shared by all of us at Nobel If you ever feel that someone is not respecting them then… TELL A TEACHER
