Parts of a Plant Leaves Roots Stem Flower

Why Plants Need Leaves Makes the food Balance the amount of water Leaves use air, water, and the energy from the sun to make food Balance the amount of water Lets excess (extra) water out Protection Might be poisonous, sharp or tough to chew to prevent from being eaten by animals

Types of Leaves

Quick Quiz What do plants and animals need to live? What are the four main parts of a plant? How does a leaf help a plant live?

How Roots Help Plants The root system of a plant is often below the ground The roots help the plant Hold it in the ground Take in water and minerals Store food made by the plant Roots take in water through their root hairs, which grow deep in to the soil to capture water Roots transport water from underground to the stems and leaves

Types of Roots

How Stems Help Plants A plant’s stems help the plant… By holding up its leaves, flowers, and fruits Carries food from the leaves to the roots Stems can be thin and grow along the surface of the ground, or can wrap around the plant like a vine. The stems of a cactus are thick and swell as they store water. The stems shrink as they lose water. Helps them to survive in the desert.

Types of Stems

Quick Quiz How do roots help a plant? How do stems help a plant?

How Flowers Help Plants A plant’s flowers help the plant… Make the seeds and/or pollen Bees or other animals, or wind pollinate a flower when they move pollen to the flower part that makes seeds. After a seed is pollinated, seeds form near the center of the flower. A fruit often grows to surround and protect the seeds.

Types of Flowers

How do seeds help the plant? Has a tiny plant inside that can grow in to a new plant Seed coat protects the young plant inside the seed

Types of Seeds

How do plants make new plants? Scattering Seeds Wind Scatters seeds that have parachutes or wings Water Scatters seeds that float, such as coconuts Carried by Animals Scatters seeds that can stick to fur Eaten by Animals Scatters seeds when they eat fruit

Quick Quiz 1. How do flowers help the plant? 2. How do seeds help the plant?

What do plants need to germinate? Right temperature Right amount of water Right amount of air

Germination Process When conditions are right… A seed begins to sprout and a root grows from it Stem grows from the soil and grows leaves The leaves use sunlight to make sugar for food Seedling becomes an adult plant with flowers Flowers pollinate and new seeds are formed If the seeds germinate, they grow in to new plants.

Life Cycle of a Plant Seeds in fruit- the part of a peanut you eat is a seed Germinating Seed- when a peanut germinates, a stem grows upward and a root grows downward Seedling- as the small peanut plant grows leaves, it can begin making sugar for food Adult plant with seeds – adult flower stalks grow downward. The peanut flowers make their seeds underground. When the adult plant dies it becomes part of the soil.

Life Cycle of a Plant

Types of Cones Cones help transport pollen and seeds Small pollen cones Wind blows pollen from small pollen cones to large seed cones Large seed cones Pollen attaches and seeds begin to grow When the seeds are ripe they fall to the ground Seed can grow in to a new plant

Types of Cones

Quick Quiz What does germinate mean? What is the life cycle of a plant? What is the purpose of cones?
