Sexually Transmitted Diseases THE TRUTH ABOUT STDS Learning Goal: I can explain HOW you can contract STDS, HOW TO AVOID THEM AND CAN NAME SPECIFICS TYPES OF stds along with there symptoms. Success criteria: I have completed my poster on a specific std. I completed my whole std worksheet. I can name 3 different types of stds.

Assignment In groups you will be finding out information about a common STD. After searching through the information create a poster with the following information: The name of the STD How the STD is spread Symptoms of the STD and how long after contact the symptoms occur Whether or not the STD can be cured Whether or not the STD can be treated and if so how What can happen if the STD goes untreated Ways to protect yourself from the STD Any other interesting facts you find

Notes Fill in your STD notes using the posters the class has created. If there are questions you cannot find the answers to on the poster just leave them blank at this time. Make sure you are writing the correct information under the correct STD!

How is it spread? Sex, when a mucous membranes come in contact w/ infected semen/mucous secretions Protection: Abstinence, mutual monogamy, condoms Can it be treated? Yes through medications Can it be cured? Yes If untreated, what happens? Scar fallopian tubes, infertility, inability to have kids Symptoms: Inflammation, discharge, burning, pain, swelling, many have no symptoms When will symptoms occur? 1-3 weeks if symptoms are to occur CHLAMYDIA * A bacterial infection * The most common STD * At least 3 million cases a year in the U.S.

How is it spread? Direct contact with infected area (warts do not have to be present to spread) Protection: Abstinence, condoms, vaccination for females Can it be treated? Yes, medication, removal of warts Can it be cured? No If untreated, what happens? Possibly cancer Symptoms: Warts on cervix, genitals or anus; no symptoms for some When will symptoms occur? Varies from person to person GENITAL WARTS & HPV * Over 100 types of HPV and over 30 cause genital warts

PUBIC LICE (CRABS) * Parasite – bugs that live on pubic hair How is it spread? Sex, contact of infected pubic hair to other pubic hair Protection: Abstinence, monogamy … condoms do NOT work!! Can it be treated? Yes through creams or shampoo Can it be cured? Yes If untreated, what happens? Discomfort, pain, future infections Symptoms: Itching, “blue spots”, some have none When will symptoms occur? Varies … irritation occurs fairly quickly PUBIC LICE (CRABS) * Parasite – bugs that live on pubic hair

How is it spread? Sex, direct skin contact Protection: Abstinence, mutual monogamy Can it be treated? Yes, medications to speed up healing Can it be cured? NO!! If untreated, what happens? Outbreaks will be more severe or last longer Symptoms: Sores, blisters, cuts, itching, burning, pain, discharge When will symptoms occur? Varies … days, weeks, months, or years GENITAL HERPES * Virus which infects about 1 in 5 adults!! * Recurrent skin irritation on genitals * Outbreaks occur about 4-5 times/year

GONORRHEA * Bacterial infection * Often occurs with Chlamydia How is it spread? Sex Protection: Abstinence, monogamy, condoms Can it be treated? Yes, through medications Can it be cured? Yes If untreated, what happens? Infertility, miscarriage, menstrual problems, urethral scarring Symptoms: Puss-like discharge, burning, pain, back pain; possibly no symptoms When will symptoms occur? Men = 2-5 days; Women = 10 days or possibly never GONORRHEA * Bacterial infection * Often occurs with Chlamydia

How is it spread? Sex, or through contact of mucous membranes Protection: Abstinence, monogamy, condoms Can it be treated? Yes, through penicillin Can it be cured? Yes If untreated, what happens? Blindness, paralysis, bone problems, organ problems 4 Stages of Symptoms: 1st – single sore; 2nd – rash on hands/feet, warts, loss of hair; Latent – none; Late – small tumors on skin, bone, organs, heart problems, blindness, paralysis, insanity When will symptoms occur? 10-90 days SYPHILIS * Bacterial infection that can spread to the heart, brain, and nervous system
