Big City Cool pg 3 Block Party-145th Street Style by Walter Dean Myers Main Character-Peaches

Main Character Says Actions looks Thoughts What Others Say “cool what? I aint scared of no J.T.” Picks a fight with J.T. for no reason. Young (only 15) Assumes J.T. is a bad kid from prior knowledge “ So Peaches was sad and though she has lost her best friend.” “This is 145th Street. Hurt happens here just like everywhere else. Sometimes you can deal with it, sometimes you just got to get some help” Consoles J.T.’s Mom when there is no one else there to help her. Darker colored skin Automatically thinks Squeezie is against her “Peaces is the type of girl you don’t mess with”

Self Concept Squeezie wants to be a smart person. she thinks her moms new husband is bad for her and trys to look out for her mother. Her self concept is challenged when she sees how he is actually a good man and worthy of her mom. She makes up for her false acquisitions on J.T. by raising money for his family to help them out with food and a home. I think this does not fully make up for what she did because she will always feel bad for her actions.

Theme Acceptance Judging before you actually know -Both J.T. and big Joe She has to learn that her mother has moved on and she has to accept her moms new man She jumped to conclusions with both J.T. and Big Joe

Literary Devices “Who comin up here” – dialogue that helps show characterization “the light coming a crack in the door to the roof filtered through her hair to make a halo around her face….” – metaphor about the goodness she really is. The narrator telling the story from her point of view -I plan on imitating the dialogue use. It gives a good sense of feel how the story is going.
