Thank you for your interest in Emory! PLEASE REVIEW THIS IF: You have applied to the Transitional Year Residency at Emory. You have applied to the Transitional Year at Emory and are concerned that you haven’t received an interview yet. You are thinking of applying to our program and had a few questions.

#1: How many residents does the Emory TY program take each year?

EMORY WELCOMES 24 NEW TRANSITIONAL YEAR RESIDENTS EACH YEAR. 7 positions are pre-allocated for Radiology TY interns 3 positions are pre-allocated for Neurology 6 positions are pre-allocated for Anesthesia The remaining eight positions are usually allocated to applicants in other Emory advanced programs such as but not limited to Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and PM&R

#2: What is the difference between the Transitional Year and the Preliminary IM Year at Emory? The Preliminary IM year is supervised and managed by the Department of Medicine. Applicants who need a one year-program prior to entering most advanced programs should apply to the TY program. The Transitional Year is a separate ACGME-accredited program from Preliminary IM. Prelim IM applicants are pre-allocated as categorical matches with advanced programs. Both programs work within the Dept of Internal Medicine.

My Emory Neurology interview was enough??? #3: What should I do if I haven’t received an interview for the TY Program? My Emory Neurology interview was enough??? Woo hoo!!! VERY IMPORTANT: Applicants who’ve been granted interviews in Emory advanced programs DO NOT require separate TY interviews. TY positions connected to Emory advanced programs are based upon interviews in the advanced programs.

#4: What if I don’t wish to stay at an Emory advanced program? The Emory TY program is dedicated to providing a comprehensive clinical base year to those requiring one prior to their residency programs. Consideration is given to all applicants, but particularly those connected to Emory or advancing to our programs. A small percentage of our house staff advance to programs outside of Emory University.

#5: I see a lot of TY NRMP numbers. Which do I rank? Radiology, Anesthesiology and Neurology EACH HAVE SEPARATE NRMP numbers connected to their programs. These spots can only be occupied by those also matching in the associated advanced program. All applicants (desiring to stay at Emory for all training) should be sure to FIRST RANK the specialty specific TY NRMP number and then rank the undesignated TY program NRMP number SECOND. If in doubt, CALL TO CONFIRM.

#6: I wasn’t granted an interview at an Emory advanced program #6: I wasn’t granted an interview at an Emory advanced program. Will a separate interview be offered? Unfortunately, we do not offer separate interviews to applicants who haven’t been afforded interviews by an EUSOM advanced program. Our applicants are all ranked based upon the feedback from the advanced programs.

#7: Does the TY program director rank all 24 positions? No. The Program Directors for Radiology, Neurology, and Anesthesiology all rank their pre-allocated slots independent of the TY Program Director. The 8 remaining slots are ranked by the TY program leadership with the input of the advanced programs.

#8: Do TY interns have a weekly continuity clinic? Generally speaking, no. For our ACGME required ambulatory medicine requirement, TY residents spend a month at the Atlanta VAMC in clinic. TY residents who desire a continuity clinic, however, can and have had them easily arranged.

#9: Do you offer international elective experiences for your TY interns? Regrettably, due to the tight requirements of a 12 month academic year and CMS constraints, we do not. Our 4+ area hospitals, however, serve a very diverse population and represent several countries.

#10: What is Atlanta like as a place to live? (We asked a few residents.) “Awesome!” “Hot in the summer!” “Easy to get flights in and out of!” “Fun on weekends.” “A melting pot.” “Challenging hills if you’re a runner.” “Chock full of history.” “Never, ever, ever a dull moment.” “You won’t want to leave.”
