Challenges and Solutions

Challenges Case 1: within PRC Every end user goes through undetermined Internet path to the source server All traffic are destined to the source server, i.e. bandwidth consumption and loading of source server is very high Some users may experience poor performance if the traffic needs passing through different Internet provider network

Challenges Every end user goes through undetermined Internet path to the source server All traffic are destined to the source server, i.e. bandwidth consumption and loading of source server is very high Users in PRC may experience poor performance if the source server is located outside PRC Case 2: across PRC

Solutions Optimize the access path between end users and source server Add more servers to lower source server loading Upgrade bandwidth Place servers in different cities / provinces in PRC to improve performance Content Distribution service meets all the above conditions!

DYX’s Anwser: Content Distribution

Content Distribution What is Content Distribution and how it works? It consists of THREE major components: Smart DNS (Global Load Balancing) – redirect requests to the optimal server (CDN node), typically one that is nearest to the end user CDN node – geographically dispersed caching machines, act as source server to provide content

Smart Bandwidth (cont.) What is Content Distribution and how it works? Infrastructure 105 CDN nodes on national backbone 50Gbps converged bandwidth Node Clusters consist of 4U Xeon-based Blade Server 7x24x365 proactive network monitoring & maintenance Internet network coverage over China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile & China Unicom

Smart DNS DNS lookup www.abc.com End user’s machine asks DNS server (typically provided by ISP): What is the IP address of www.abc.com? DNS lookup DNS server asks the Smart DNS server. www.abc.com * Hostname lookup steps simplified.

Smart DNS DNS lookup www.abc.com DNS server answers the end user. Smart DNS server will reply IP address of www.abc.com nearest to end user, depending on the IP address of DNS server used. www.abc.com

Types of Content Static content www.abc.com Static content Content is cached when passing through to speed up future requests www.abc.com Cached Cached

Content Distribution

Results Virtually there are many servers providing the same service at the same time All CDN nodes are distributed in different cities and provinces in PRC with various Internet service providers All incoming traffic from PRC are redirected to the nearest CDN server in PRC End users can always enjoy the best performance Case 1: within PRC

Case Study Case Study 1: Gigabyte Source server placed in Diyixian SH IDC, subscribed bandwidth is 30Mbps Single source server serving users from everywhere in PRC

Case Study Before using Content Distribution: Bandwidth utilization of source is full! (95th percentile is 29.878Mbps) All users’ requests are destined to source and access speed is restricted because of the bandwidth limit. Server loading is heavy.

Case Study Bandwidth utilization at source is lowered Using Content Distribution: Bandwidth utilization at source is lowered Bandwidth bottleneck removed Higher access speed and download time is reduced

Case Study Using Content Distribution: Bandwidth utilization of source dropped 82%! (95th percentile is 5.531Mbps) Server loading is relieved also.

Case Study Using Content Distribution: Users’ requests are redirected to CDN nodes instead of source, bandwidth consumption raised dramatically to 84.23Mbps (95th percentile). Bandwidth limit at source is no longer a bottleneck.

Case Study City Download time before using Content Distribution End-user experience: City Download time before using Content Distribution Download time using Content Distribution % improved Beijing 642 514 19.94% Shanghai 1207 765 36.62% Chengdu 669 491 26.61% Shenzhen 405 399 0.01% Download speed improved significantly: Download time reduced up to 36%!

Case Study Source server placed in HK or TP Case Study 2: Online gaming Source server placed in HK or TP Performance is poor for requests from PRC Bandwidth utilization and loading of source server is high

Case Study Requests from users in PRC are redirected to CDN nodes Using Content Distribution: Requests from users in PRC are redirected to CDN nodes Traffic from CDN nodes to source server goes through Diyixian backbone, performance is greatly improved for both static and dynamic content Static content is cached in CDN nodes to enhance access speed and further lower bandwidth consumption of source

Case Study Source server placed in HK or TP Case Study 3: Video Streaming Source server placed in HK or TP Video streaming is not smooth for users in PRC Source server can’t be placed in PRC due to legal issue

Case Study Using Content Distribution: Video session is split in CDN node, many users can be served by single session from source server Traffic from CDN node to source server goes through Diyixian backbone, performance is ideal for time-sensitive applications like video streaming CDN nodes can be configured to download video stream from other CDN node or source server Source server is not placed in PRC, no legal concerns

Pricing Model Charging scheme: by bandwidth (per Mbps) Notification email will be sent to pre-registered contacts when peak utilization is over subscribed bandwidth If 95th percentile of actual utilization is over subscribed bandwidth, exceeded utilization will be charged per Mbps Works best with DYXnet ONE IDC and Content Distribution Plus
