Why COSHH Decide what could harm you in your job and the precautions to stop it. This is part of the risk assessment. 1 2 In a way you can understand, explain how risks will be controlled and tell you who is responsible for this. I am sure you are familiar with this health & safety poster, it’s a common site, by law must be displayed in every commercial premises in the land. In very simple terms, the poster, informs workers what they and their employers need to do to produce a safe working environment. In this case, the employer is the University and its take its responsibilities seriously when it comes to safety. COSHH Process COSHH Risk Assessment Your Responsibility

Why COSHH Ok, we are here predominately to discuss the use of cleaning materials. The University has selected a range of cleaning chemicals to clean the campus. The core range numbers 12 in total, all of which have different characteristics. COSHH Process COSHH Risk Assessment Your Responsibility

C O S H H Why COSHH CONTROL OF SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS to HEALTH Ok so what’s COSHH and how does it work, well the following slide should explain how the process works and why. COSHH Process COSHH Risk Assessment Your Responsibility

Tab 2 COSHH Process Ok so what’s COSHH and how does it work, well the following slide should explain how the process works and why. Why COSHH COSHH Risk Assessment Your Responsibility

COSHH Process Lets start at the beginning. Wray Bros supplies the UOM with its cleaning materials and when it does so, it has a responsibility to pass on information to the university about the contents of the chemicals and highlight if any products contain any risks and it does this by producing a safety data sheet. Now, before any products are used, the data sheet will be examined by a manager, or a supervisor in the university, to see if any of the items pose any risks to the staff who’ll be using them. If there are any risks then a note will be produced and this is called a COSHH Risk Assessment, in the case of the university all the risk assessments will be kept in the wisdom box, which the ADC’s have access to. These assessments need to be presented to anybody using the products with given with guidance. The assessments also need to be checked every year to make sure they are up to date, or when a new product is introduced Why COSHH COSHH Risk Assessment Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment Ok here is what an actual risk assessment looks like. Its produced in an easy to understand fashion and it contains information including the following. Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment What is it and who supplied it. How do you use the product, what's it for, how is it diluted. Are there any risks associated with the product. What do the pictograms advise? What do the signal words instruct: DANGER – If the chemical has a more severe hazards WARNING – If the chemical has a less severe hazard Who supplied you with the product How should the product be used Are there any risks associated with using the product What protective clothing should be used and what type Should any PPE be worn when using the product, if so what type. Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment Any first aid measures? How should the product be stored and where. What should be done when spillages occur. How do you dispose of the used container Hazards presented by chemicals are communicated through CLP. Classification and labelling of chemicals. Your COSHH Risk Assessment is basically an instruction manual for the safe use of the product. It contains other information including, In case of an emergency, what first aid should be administered. How should the product be stored, and what should you do when a spill occurs. CLP information which gives specific details relating to the hazards associated with the product Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCT LABEL Instructions on how to use. Hazard Pictogram Signal Word Hazard Statement Precautionary Statements The regulatory labelling of dangerous substances and preparations is a simple means of informing and alerting you of the dangers involved in their use. When the products are transferred to other containers, the label must be systematically reproduced on the new container (this only applies when an undiluted product is transferred). As well as describing what the product does, the label contains, among other things, one or more danger symbols and a limited number of warnings as to the risks. These are called risk or safety phrases. The label identifies the product immediately and enables you to avoid any confusion or handling errors. The labels include hazard statement and precautionary statements and these should be followed for use or in the event of emergency. Additional information is available on the Safety Data Sheet. Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

COSHH Risk Assessment Okay, that’s COSHH dealt with, but what else can you expect to find in your wisdom box. Well, more guidance has been produced, to help demonstrate clearly how to use the products selected by the university and this comes in the form of a product usage guide………or a PUG! Why COSHH COSHH Process Your Responsibility

Your Responsibility Why COSHH COSHH Process COSHH Risk Assessment

Your Responsibility Its important for the people using these products to familiarise themselves with the COSHH Risk Assessments as they are designed to keep staff safe. 1 2 If you have any problems understanding the information supplied then contact your supervisor for more assistance.
