Medical College, Gwalior ( CTM- 36 D- 1201 ) Introduction Aims of study Aim of study is to assess the usefulness of Human Umbilical Cord Blood (HUCB) in the geriatric diseases and its effect on aging process in human beings. Methodology Written Informed consent has been taken from patient in whom cord blood has been transfused and the donor (mother), from which the cord blood has been collected for the study. Cord blood was collected in the labour room from healthy placenta via umbilical cord venipuncture in 100ml CPD bag. After collection, units were transferred to blood bank where it was tested for ABO blood grouping, Rh typing and irregular antibodies plus screened for transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs). ABO and Rh identical units after cross-matching were transfused to registered patients. Ageing represents the accumulation of changes in a human being over time i.e. physical, psychological, and social changes. Ageing is among the greatest known risk factors for most human diseases: of the roughly 150,000 people who die each day across the globe, about two thirds die from age-related causes. The causes of ageing are uncertain; current theories are assigned to the damage concept, whereby the accumulation of damage (such as DNA oxidation) may cause biological systems to fail, or to the programmed ageing concept, whereby internal processes (such as DNA methylation) may cause ageing. Cord blood has cocktail of stem cells (haemopoietic, Mesenchymal, multipotent, adult progenitor cells, unrestricted somatic, endothelial progenitor and immature immune cells), higher level of CD34 count and a rich source of interleukin, cytokine, growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, epidermal growth factors, etc. By these specialties, cord blood helps in promoting inflammatory response, healing of wounds, burns, brain /spinal cord injuries and in geriatric age group for increasing immune competence. Cord Blood Transfusion Results Out of 200 transfusions given so far, 60 transfusions were given to the patients (n=37); above 45 years of age for their different clinical conditions. We have observed that apart from their clinical conditions, cord blood is helpful in improving the conditions such as appearance, diabetes, memory, physical fitness, vision, hearing, asthma etc. It is also helpful in degenerative and autoimmune conditions. Our research project is “Transfusion of Umbilical cord Whole blood in different clinical conditions". This project is approved by ethical committee of our institute and appraisal committee of Department of health, MP government under ICMR Project Conclusion Our preliminary observations are that Umbilical Cord Whole blood is helpful in delaying ageing process & useful in diseases related with the old age.
