What is El Dia de los Muertos?

El Dia de los Muertos History: This ancient Mexican holiday began as a day of thanks. It became a time put aside to remember our ancestors and people we love who have died. On the first day-November 1st, relatives put flowers on graveyards or in vases with cards. Then they create an alter somewhere in the house. These alters are not places of worship. They serve the same purpose as a scrapbook or a photo album. Pictures of the departed, along with favorite loved objects are placed on the alter.

ALTARS….Day of the Dead Altars, are not for worshiping but for offering our love and remembering our departed family members. It is not a sad ritual. It's a day of happiness because we will be remembering our loved ones. It is not a careless or fearless confrontation of death. It is a moment to reflect upon one's life and the cycle of life and death.

The rest of this day is spent making the favorite foods of this person (or persons.) On the second day - November 2, families have big celebrations at their homes. They serve the food they made the day before. They eat candies shaped like skeletons. Friends stop by and people dance and sing. This is a very happy holiday.

On the third day - November 3, the holiday expands to the town On the third day - November 3, the holiday expands to the town. There may be parades and floats and costumed characters. this ancient holiday is as it always was - a time of remembrance and love. So, don't be afraid of the Day of the Dead. This is a happy holiday A time of remembrance and love.

THE TOYMAKING TRADITION A thriving tradition of toymaking plays a role in Day of the Dead. The skeleton is by far the most popular image and a favorite among small children. Who knows what makes skeleton toys funnier than toys depicting the living? Maybe it's the surprising juxtaposition of the dead doing something lively and spirited that brings a chuckle to the most faces. Perhaps by making death more approachable through friendly images, like a dancing skeleton playing a guitar, Mexicans begin to lose their fear of death at an early age.
