Why are we passionate about reading for pleasure? “Researchers found that children, between the ages of 10 and 16 years, who read for pleasure made more progress in these areas [maths, spelling and vocabulary] than those who rarely chose to read. In regards to cognitive development…reading for pleasure is more important than parental education levels….Research also points to a multiplicity of other personal and academic advantages of reading for pleasure, including improved general knowledge, increased self-confidence as a reader, a richer vocabulary and increased accuracy in spelling, an improved capacity for comprehension and greater pleasure in reading in later life.
