The Class President Vocabulary Sneak Peak http://www.opencourtresources.com Before using this, the vocabulary words are introduced (basic), then with this the students have to recall using the first picture and then it is reinforced with the next slide giving definition – kids read chorally – then say the word they were thinking that it is – and then chorally we read the sentence – relate and discuss if further is needed. PRINT these out in note card size for small group activities. (Students match photo to correct word, have the kids practice quizzing each other, print and post, etc…..) You may do a quick run of this on the last day or fourth day of the story again for clear understanding.

A person running for office. Candidate (noun) A person running for office. Mr. Flores said the students could nominate anyone they choose, even if the candidate did not have a poster on the wall.

Background Knowledge Class President is an excerpt from the book with the same title. Its genre is realistic fiction. Elements of realistic fiction are: The characters behave as people do in real life. The setting of the story is or could be a real place. The events are based on a conflict that could occur in real life. Toward the end of this selection, the main character, Julio, is nominated to run for class president. One of his potential opponents comments that Julio should not be allowed to run for class president because he is Puerto Rican. (Discuss) What do you think are some important qualities for a class president to have? Why?

Preview and Prepare (You will use your anthology book) What is the title and the name of the author and illustrator? Preview the selection’s pictures, what can you gather from them? What do you think this story has to do with the unit’s theme Cooperation and Communication? What do you think the author’s purpose for writing this selection is?
