Focus on Energy 2017 Program Overview Sarah Speck, Energy Engineer Business Incentives Program

OVERVIEW Focus on Energy is Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy Since 2001 has worked with eligible residents and businesses to install energy efficiency and renewable energy projects Provides financial incentives, education, information and other resources in an effort to encourage participation that leads to increased energy savings and reduced utility bills. 2

Mission Statement

Business Programs Public Service Commission (PSC) Program Administrator Design Assistance Small Business Business Incentives Large Energy Users Ag, Schools, & Government Multifamily

Agriculture, Schools, and Government Program Definitions New construction or major renovation over 5,000 ft2 Design Assistance Businesses with average July/August electric usage under 40,000 kWh Small Business Monthly energy bills over $60,000, demand >1 MW, or by affiliation Large Energy Users Agricultural Producers, Tribes, Federal, State, County, and Municipal Entities, K-12 Schools, Colleges & Universities (excluding UW system) Agriculture, Schools, and Government Businesses that do not fall under any other program, now including Chain Stores and Franchises Business Incentives Residential building with four or more dwelling spaces (apartments, condos, mixed-use buildings) Multifamily

Prescriptive Incentives Found in catalogs Agribusiness Commercial Kitchen Equipment Commercial Refrigeration HVAC/Plumbing Lighting Process Systems No pre-approval required unless Reservation code needed or otherwise noted in catalog Total incentives over $25,000 (recommended at $10,000) Can be applied for within 60 days of completing the installation Two page application (pages 5 and 6 of catalogs) Supplemental data sheet may be required

Custom Incentives For measures not found in prescriptive catalogs Non-standard technologies (e.g. industrial process equipment) Not a one-for-one replacement First-year savings must pay back between 1.5 and 10 years (8 years for LEU) Pre-approval required prior to equipment being purchased or beginning labor $0.60/therm, $100/peak kW reduced, and $0.03/kWh ($0.02/kWh for LEU lighting)

Sample Documentation Custom Application (2 pages) Proposal or scope of work, including project cost and equipment model numbers where applicable Utility data may be requested (EA will facilitate) If unique project or product, vendor provided savings estimates are helpful, but not required Energy Model Outputs Not required, can earn additional incentives Example: energy modeled chiller plant Prescriptive Incentive = $39,000 Custom Incentive = $48,000, included control strategies and pump motor reduction

Pre-approval Process For any custom measures or prescriptive incentives >$25,000 Customer or Trade Ally notifies EA of project EA determines project eligibility and incentive Project is reviewed by Focus on Energy EA sends customer incentive agreement Customer may move forward with project/purchase equipment Project completed before deadline and EA is notified

Grocery Store Typical Energy Use Refrigeration accounts for about ½ of your store’s total energy spend CBECS, Table 5. Major fuel consumption by end use, 2012 – food sales Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) 2012: Major fuel consumption by end use, food sales

Implementation Trends – Reduce Open Multideck Cases Replace Open Multideck-Style Cases with Cases With Doors $80.00 per linear foot Retrofit Open Multideck- Style Cases With Doors $60.00 per linear foot This strategy serves multiple purposes: one to keep customers more comfortable when they’re shopping in these areas so that the cold air isn’t just blasting on them without containment, two: it has been shown to increase shelf life (decreasing shrink and spoilage). From an energy savings standpoint, by encapsulating the cold air into a built up envelope, it not only allows you to possibly downsize your refrigeration system, but also can potentially reduce your natural gas space heating costs because the cold air is restricted in those areas as well.

Implementation Trends – ECM Evaporator Fan Motors Reach-In Case Evaporator Fan Motor $25 per motor Walk-in Evaporator Fan Motor $25-50 per motor, depending on motor size Electronically Commutated (EC) motors – have been around for quite a while, you’d be hard-pressed to find a new case that is manufactured without EC Motors already installed in the evaporator section. Based on the DOE requirements for refrigeration, ECMs have become a standard practice for almost all of case manufactured for sale in the US market after 2012. However, if you do have older cases that have shaded pole motors or permanent split capacitor motors, it is very cost effective to retrofit these motors with EC motors. EC motors are around 75% efficient, while the earlier generation Shaded Pole motors are around 20%-40% efficient. Based on the run hours for an evaporator fan motors, a payback of a year or less is easily achievable when you factor in the reduced heat the motor adds to the refrigerated case.

Implementation Trends – LED Case Lights Vertical LED Case Lights $20 per door Horizontal LED Case Lights $4 per linear foot of lamp Ex. (1) 8ft case with (2) rows of canopy lighting, (1) row of nose lighting and (3) rows of shelf lighting  48 linear feet of lamps LED refrigerated case lighting – Energy savings can exceed 50% over the baseline T8 or T12 lamps. Also provides a higher quality light on the product being illuminated, and makes the colors pop. As always, make sure that the products you’re considering are on the Design Lights Consortium qualified products list under the category “Vertical (or Horizontal) Refrigerated Case Luminaires”
