Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. PUT AWAY BACKPACK. Turn to back of notebook. Write the title Walk-In and today’s date. Copy the question and answer in sentences: What is the difference between a glossary and a dictionary? How are they the same?

Answer A glossary and a dictionary both give meanings to words. However, the words in a glossary are focused on one subject, like a historical glossary in our textbook.

Measuring historic time

Measuring Time Goal: Understand terms like BC, AD, BCE and CE. Be able to put events in order. Have a sense of how long ago something occurred. Think of time on a timeline. Very Long Past Now long ago ago

Measuring Time Follow along as we draw a timeline and mark important dates on it. Let’s mark these times on it: 20 BC 20 AD 200 BC 200 AD 2000 BC 2000 AD

Measuring Time Follow along as we draw a timeline and mark important dates on it. No year zero! BC = Before Christ AD = Anno Domini (in the year of our Lord), not After Death (of Christ) Bigger BC numbers go more into the past Bigger AD numbers get closer to the present

Two More Terms Some historians did not want to measure time relative to a religious event like the birth of Christ, so two more terms are used. CE = Common Era (same as AD) BCE = Before Common Era (same as BC)

Draw some dates on a timeline Draw a timeline, and label the year 1 BCE and 1 CE. Mark on: 3000 BCE (Stonehenge built) 20000 BCE (cave people lived) 1776 CE (America gets its freedom) 2005 or 2006 (year most of you were born!)
