RESEARCH PARTICIPATION Research participation can add extra credit toward your final grade in this class. Options: Pretest survey Study participation 1 Hour = 1 SONA System credit Example: Pretest = 1hr = 1 SONA System credit 1 SONA System credit = ? (check your syllabus) Two options for participation Pretest survey: takes approx. one hour and is worth one credit Non-pretest studies have varying lengths and are worth varying credit values Credits are given in half hour increments (30 minutes = .5 credits) Check your syllabus to determine how many extra credit points 1 SONA credit is worth

WHY RESEARCH? Not typical extra-credit busy work Actual studies that are published and that contribute to the field Brings in funding to UW which helps lower tuition fees Not just busy work-many of the studies are interesting and can be fun to participate in The work gets published and actually contributes to the knowledge in the field-so your contribution is meaningful Great way to get involved with research and maybe even identify a lab whose project you might be interested in working on if you’re looking for a career in psychology Brings funds to UW which lower tuition, and that’s always a good thing

SONA ACCOUNT Create a personal account Smartphone App In SONA: Online http://uwyo.sona-systems.com User ID (email confirmation) Smartphone App Search for “SONA Systems” Available for iOS and Android operating systems In SONA: Search for studies Register for studies Cancel appointments Check credits earned There are two options for registering with SONA 1). Online at this website you can create a user ID and account-I’ll show you what that looks like in a moment 2). You can use the smartphone app In SONA, you can register for studies, track the studies you’re participating in, cancel your appointments, and check how many credits you’ve earned at any point in the semester

SONA This is where you can register for studies, cancel appointments, view your credits completed, check to make sure your credits are entered correctly…etc. Studies are not uploaded just yet, so give us a few weeks…will upload studies closer to when the pretest screener is completed Some of the studies will ask them to participate in person and some will be online. It'll say what type of study it is when they click on a study's name. The ones you do in person tend to be more interesting but the ones online are really convenient because you can do them from any computer at any time.

STUDY PARTICIPATION http://uwyo.sona-systems.com SONA manages details E-mail reminders, receipts, etc. Must be 17 years or older Email coordinator if under age 17 Some studies require you to be 18+ If you sign up for a study, you must show up or cancel your spot! Cancel through SONA no later than 24 hours in advance Failure to cancel at least one hour in advance results in a strike “3 strikes and you’re out” No longer able to earn credit through SONA If you do not show up, you are taking spots from your fellow classmates who may need it If you do not show up, you are dramatically inconveniencing the researcher 3 strikes is a SONA rule-I can’t save you

STUDY PARTICIPATION: PRETEST SURVEY 8:00am Monday, September 11th to 9:00pm Sunday, September 24th Pretest is only available for 2 weeks You will receive ONE credit hour for completing the pretest You will NOT be eligible for MOST studies if you do not complete it during the 2 weeks it is available If you miss the pretest, you may still qualify for a reduced number of studies If you choose to participate in the pretest survey WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND…it will be available for 2 weeks, from 9/11-9/24 Must be done on own time-really quick and easy…takes about one hour and can do it in your pajamas while eating breakfast Even if you don’t think you’ll participate in studies, suggest doing the pretest because it’s easy credit and you may find a study of interest If you don’t do it, might not be eligible for MOST studies: researchers use the pretest to determine who might meet their specific study criteria e.g., if there is a study on social anxiety, the researcher will use the pretest to identify people who may experience social anxiety, or not, and then selectively invite those people to participate If you don’t complete the pretest, you may still be able to participate in a few, more general studies, but the number of studies you can choose from will be reduced

DEADLINES AND QUESTIONS Last day to participate in research: Monday, December 11th Participate early! Questions about a specific study should go to the researcher in charge. By the end of the semester, some studies may have already wrapped up or you may have difficulty scheduling in mass attempt to get into a study Questions about getting your credit should especially go to the researcher, because the researcher has to give you credit for completing his/her study Give researchers a few days to give you credit, and if they don’t, send them an email. If you do not hear back from them, contact me and I can help you get in touch with the researcher.
