Safety on Campus October 8,2012 Nyeka A. , Erin B. & Tabrisha W. Period 5

Why do you think we chose to talk about campus safety? Pre questions Why do you think we chose to talk about campus safety? Before reading the articles what came to mind when you heard “campus safety”?

Why is it important to have a campus you feel safe on Why is it important to have a campus you feel safe on? (Article 1) http://www.cosmopolitan.com/advice/tips/protect-yourself-from-rape-college-campus Almost every month Cosmo Magazine comes out with a story similar to this, why is that?

Why is it important to have a campus you feel safe on? Did you know that …..“One in five college women will be raped, or experience an attempted rape, before graduation.”-CNN.com “Of the violent crimes reported on college campuses, 1,425 (53.2 percent) were aggravated assaults, 772 (28.8 percent) were robberies, 485 (18.1 percent) were forcible rapes, and 4 (0.15 percent) were murder or non-negligent manslaughter.” -(The National Center for Victims.com)

Why is it important to have a campus you feel safe on? Did you know that under the 1990 Student-Right-To-Know act your campus is required to tell you what’s going on with the safety of your campus, but some universities still do not?(colleges.com) What are some of the pros and cons of that approach?

What can we do to ensure we are safe on campus What can we do to ensure we are safe on campus? (Article 2 & 3) http://www.collegestudentsafety.com/costsati.html https://gustavus.edu/safety/tips/crime.php

What CAN WE DO TO ENSURE WE ARE SAFE ON CAMPUS? Are there things the article mentioned that maybe you never considered? How do you feel now that you know about them? Were some of the things mentioned items you might invest in? (Pepper spray, room alarms etc.) Why or why not?

Reflection. Were the things mentioned in the articles congruent with how you envisioned college life? Why or not?  Are their more ways to promote campus safety the articles did not mention?
