Warm Up #83 – April 12, 2017 Please grab your writing folder! You need all the “notes” we used to help us write our other essays! Please also get out your GREEN and BLUE packet. If you turned these into me LATE, I will get them back to you

Body Paragraphs Use your green outline to help guide you as you write each body paragraph Combine bullet points into like ideas to give yourself enough space and detail You should use at least one quote and citation per paragraph, but you may use more You refer to your leader by their FULL or LAST name only in your essay.

In text citations and introducing quotes When you use a quote, you need to let the reader know WHERE it came from. At the end of the quote, OUTSIDE of the quotation marks, you will put the FIRST thing from the works cited citation into parentheses. This is USUALLY the author’s last name. Your quote should RELATE TO WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT

Topic Sentence for Body paragraph 2: Claudette Colvin exemplifies the quality of humility through her actions and achievements. Detail and Support: Humility is the quality of refusing recognition, praise, or personal benefit from an action. Claudette Colvin, at only 15 years old, made a stand for not just her own basic human rights and dignity, but for the rights and dignity of all people of color in her community, all without the demand for repayment or recognition. Detail and Support: When she was only 15, she was humble enough to stage a peaceful protest when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. It takes great humility and modesty for a 15 years old to avoid engaging in violence or unnecessary dramatics.  But even more amazing, when Rosa Parks repeated the act of protest 9 months later, Colvin did not cry out and demand that she be recognized. Instead, she accepted the fact that Parks was a better face for the Civil Rights movement. (Johnson) Detail and Support: Claudette Colvin also demonstrated that she was not protesting to hurt anyone, but rather for a cause greater than herself. Colvin herself recalls in an interview with NPR that the most “volatile” thing she did was that “I refused to walk,” forcing the police to cuff and drag her from the bus. (Bridges) Concluding Sentence: Clearly, Colvin’s peaceful protesting and her modesty make her a quiet, yet powerful hero.    

Remember that your conclusion needs… A restated thesis: Thesis: Claudette Colvin possesses the honorable leadership qualities of humility and resiliency. Restated Thesis: Due to her acts of humility and resiliency, Claudette Colvin is a leader who is driven by honor rather than ambition. A call to action: WHAT DO YOU WANT THE READER TO GO OUT AND DO? HOW CAN THEY ACT LIKE A LEADER? WHAT LESSON CAN THEY LEARN FROM YOUR LEADER?
