Parent Reading Workshop How to be a good reading partner at home.

WORKSHOP AIMS: To understand your child’s reading experience in Whitehall Primary To understand your child’s end of year reading expectations To understand the elements of reading: Decoding (How to read words) Comprehension (Reading for meaning) Develop vocabulary To ask questions, discuss and enjoy!

National Curriculum 2014 Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Good comprehension draws from linguistic knowledge (in particular of vocabulary and grammar) and on knowledge of the world. All pupils must be encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum.

Whitehall’s Reading Diet Children working individually, in groups or as a whole class to use and apply their reading skills to complete a range of tasks Children working with self-selected material including familiar text Children working in small groups with text selected by teacher so they can apply their reading strategies Children working with challenging text and the teacher models reading strategies Reading across the curriculum Personal Reading Guided Reading Shared Reading
