How do we gather information? We must consider what data we want to collect and then select an appropriate tool of analysis for obtaining this data. Data must be relevant Initial Data: Whole performance – Match Analysis Focused Data: Isolate/prioritise a weakness and look more closely at this weakness to obtain more detailed data
Methods of collecting data There are several tools of analysis we can use to obtain information on our performance Initial Data: General observation schedules Match Analysis sheets, (Video), Scattergrams Focused Data: Focused observation schedules – Movement Analysis Sheets (Video) Scattergrams
General Observation Schedule – Badminton Perform a 5 minute of badminton singles against an opponent of similar ability. Ask an observer to read the criteria for success overleaf for each of the skills performed below and place a tally mark in the appropriate box to identify if the skill was performed successfully or unsuccessfully. High Serve OHC Drop Shot Smash Net Shot Underarm Clear Backhand CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF SKILLS/TECHNIQUES PERFORMED IN BADMINTON Low Serve Shuttle flies low over the net and lands just over the service line High Serve Shuttle flies high through the air and lands between tram lines at the back of the court OHC Shuttle is hit high above and in front of head. Shuttle flies high through the air and lands between the tram lines at the back of the court Drop Shot Shuttle is hit high above and in front of head. Shuttles flies high through the air and drops sharply to the ground just over the net Smash Shuttle is hit high above and in front of the head. Shuttle is hit with great force and travels quickly in a straight line, sharp angle, to the floor of the opponents’ court Net Shot Shuttle is contacted at net height and skims over the net to land in front of opponent’s court Underarm Clear Shuttle is contacted underarm and is cleared to opponents’ court Backhand Any backhand attempted goes over the net to opponent’s court played away from opponent

Validity and Reliability Data collected must be valid and reliable Valid: Data obtained is relevant Appropriate tool of analysis used. Free from human error Reliable: Data must be accurate Non bias Objective data is more accurate than subjective.
Practical ways of obtaining valid and reliable data Invalid or unreliable information occurs when too much information is trying to be gathered at once and human error accounts for mistakes in the data. Ways to prevent this from happening are: Use video in conjunction with your Analysis Method. You can rewind and pause performance situations so that no information is missed. Totally free from human error! Use more than one observer who has previous knowledge of badminton i.e. MP or teacher. When gaining qualitative data (subjective), try and obtain quantitative data at the same time to provide you with more reliable information.
Remember! When re-testing your performance you must test under the exact same conditions. Test parameters must be identical. This will ensure all data obtained is valid and reliable and will allow you to make COMPARISONS!
