What is Hazing?? Subtle Hazing Harassment Hazing Violent Hazing :to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work :an initiation process involving harassment (Merriam-Webster, 2010) Types of Hazing Subtle Hazing Harassment Hazing Violent Hazing

Why Is It A Problem? High School 1.5 Million high school students are hazed each year --92% of them will not report Hazing --30% reported their hazing as potentially illegal --25% were hazed before age 13 College 250,000 college athletes report being hazed --40% of the coaches knew about hazing --50% of female college athletes are hazed --10% of females were physically hazed and 6-9% were sexually hazed

Positives and Negatives Positives-Unity, cohesion, loyalty, camaraderie Negatives- psychological/physical/emotional scars, wounds, distrust, pain, illegal, potentially deadly, group think.

Who Hazes? Why Do People Haze? *High School, Colleges, Professionals, and Military Why Do People Haze? "It builds team unity if it's done correctly. It can be done in a way that's kind of fun. [The rookies] may not enjoy it necessarily, but it builds some camaraderie among the team if done properly.“ (Mike Nolan 49ers Coach) (Zeigler, 2006) Hazing is usually associated with entrance into sororities and fraternities. It is not limited to the Greek Society though Hazing happens all the way from the high school, to collegiate, to Professional Level *The Carolina Panthers publically tape their rookies to the goalposts and drench them with gatorade and ice water. *Other NFL have been known to shave off rookies hair/eyebrows as well as make them run the errands of the veterans and sing silly songs Psychologically Hazing does in many cases does promote team cohesiveness and loyalty. This can be explained by the Justification error which states that “People tend to increase their liking of something they have worked hard to attain even if the thing they attained is not something they would otherwise like”

Myths Brings us together Harmless Fun It is voluntary No malicious intent Time honored traditions need to be kept alive
