Fat Tissue, Lean Tissue, and Body Water To lose weight safely and permanently, a person must lose fat tissue, not lean tissue or water. 2

Fat Tissue, Lean Tissue, and Body Water Lean body tissue is vital to health. When seeking to lose weight, lose fat, not lean tissue. When gaining weight, gain both fat and lean tissue. 3

Fat Tissue, Lean Tissue, and Body Water They type of tissue gained or lost depends on how the weight is gained or lost. The most dramatic weight changes reflect fluid loss and gain. Fluid content shouldn’t change. 4

Fat Tissue, Lean Tissue, and Body Water Using diuretics is a dangerous way to lose fluids. Diuretics cause the kidneys to draw extra water from the blood into the urine. Exercising in extreme heat to lose fluids through sweat is also dangerous. diuretic A drug that causes the body to lose fluids 5

Feasting: Weight Gain The energy from any food can build up in body fat if a person eats more calories than are spent. 6

Feasting: Weight Gain Excess of energy nutrients is stored as follows: Carbohydrates are broken down and stored as glucose. Glucose maybe stored as glycogen or body fat. Fat is broken down into fatty acids and absorbed. It is stored as body fat. Protein is broken down to amino acids and absorbed. Any excess is stored as body fat. 7

Fasting: An Unsafe Weight-Loss Strategy Fasting and low-carbohydrate diets are not healthy ways to lose weight. 8

Fasting: An Unsafe Weight-Loss Strategy The fasting body converts stored nutrients, such as protein, to get the needed glucose to function. In fasting, the body takes apart the protein in its own muscles and organs to keep up the supply of glucose needed to feed the brain and nerves. If the body were to continue to feed on itself, then death would occur in ten days. 9
