The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling

Author Facts Kipling started writing short stories while he was working at a newspaper. His daughter died when she was only 6 years old. His son died in World War 1 He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.

Main Character: Mowgli Young boy about 11 years old Raised by wolves Taught all the languages of the animals by Baloo Finds out he doesn’t belong in either the wolf pack or the human village.

Setting: The jungles of India In the past

Vocabulary Rubbish – Things that have been thrown out Lame – have a body part that is disabled Bullock – a young bull

Family is not necessarily those who gave birth to you Theme: Family is not necessarily those who gave birth to you

Quote: “I was born in the jungle; I have obeyed the Law of the Jungle; and there is no wolf of ours from whose paws I have not pulled a thorn. Surely they are my brothers.”

Connection with “If” by Rudyard Kipling Both selections discuss a boy trying to figure out what it means to grow up and be a man.

Figurative Language Onomatopoeia - “Ts! Ts!” said Kaa Simile – “From the palace you could see the rows and rows of roofless houses that made up the city, looking like empty honeycombs filled with blackness.” Idiom “We have swept the hills.”

Conflict & Resolution Man vs Man Mowgli faced Shere Khan Mowgli wound up killing Shere Khan and taking his hide back to Council Rock.

Likes I liked the characters Bagheera and Baloo because they taught Mowgli and took care of him. I liked the story of “The White Seal” because Kotick was able to save his people. I loved the story of “Rikki Tikki Tavi” because Rikki keeps the family safe.

Dislikes I disliked the story “Her Magesty’s Servants” because there wasn’t any action. I disliked “Toomai of the Elephants” because all that happened was Toomai saw a bunch of elephants gather one night.
