AGENDA – APRIL 15 & 18 TODAY YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING: WRITER’S NOTEBOOKS Things Fall Apart Notebook Paper PENCIL OR PEN Handouts from Front Table Any LATE homework (Double Entry Journals etc) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: We will read a novel, so we can analyze how characterization advances plot. We will read a novel, so we can make inferences and draw conclusions about a character’s motivation. We will read a novel, so we can analyze the conflicts within the protagonist. We will read a novel, so we can analyze the significance of the setting. We will identify, select, and cite research sources appropriately, so we can learn how to do a research paper/project.

TFA Research Projects Group Presentations Put your full name and class period at the top of your Listener Notes. Mark out the box for YOUR GROUP. Take notes in bullet points. They must be neat and easy to read. (25% of your grade). Staple your rubric (with your full name, class period, and group topic included) on top. Each student will be graded individually.

So…what is a tragic hero anyway? Take notes from the powerpoint in your Writer’s Notebooks as we go through this presentation; this is the topic for your Literary Analysis next week. What do you think of when you hear the term “tragic hero”? What characters come to mind from literature you have read in the past – Julius Caesar, Of Mice and Men, The Odyssey, anything else?

A Man of Prestige In the first four chapters of Things Fall Apart, Achebe presents Okonkwo as a man of high status in his village. Make a double entry journal on a piece of notebook paper (see model on the next slide). Fill in the chart with details from those chapters, and compare Okonkwo’s achievements and status to the traits and actions that sometimes contradict his nobility. Support EACH response with textual evidence correctly cited (i.e. parenthetical citation), (5 entries for each side) You may work with a partner if you wish to do so, but both must turn in a separate document. HOMEWORK IF NOT FINISHED IN CLASS!

Traits and Actions That Contradict His Nobility TFA Chapters 1-4 Okonkwo’s Achievements and Status Traits and Actions That Contradict His Nobility

Chapter 2 – Description of the Compound Groups of 3 or 4: 1 piece of chart paper per group. (You may also do this on your own if you prefer on computer or construction paper.)+ Reread pg.14 (Chapter 2) which describes Okonkwo’s compound. Then draw your vision of what the compound looks like. Be sure to label each building/area. Be creative and make your drawing colorful. Be sure to include drawings of the characters and animals. Write your names at the top of the chart paper; display them on the blue chart paper. Have fun with this assignment!
