The Circulatory System and the Heart

Build Background Watch this video clip (Discovery Education, The Circulatory System) about the heart, our arteries and veins, and how blood moves through our bodies. Think about: How does oxygen get delivered to all body parts? Why do we need different kinds of blood vessels (or tubes)? What is the function of the heart?

Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. Copy the question and answer in sentences: How are veins and arteries the same? How are they different?

Blood Vessels Veins carry oxygen-poor blood back in to the heart and lungs to get more oxygen. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart and lungs, to deliver oxygen.

Heart and Lungs Work Together The body takes in air through the lungs and delivers oxygen to the alveoli. The smallest blood vessels, called capillaries, pick up oxygen. The heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood through arteries to every cell in the body.

The cells put carbon dioxide into the blood. The veins carry the oxygen-poor blood (that contains CO2) back to the heart. The heart pumps the blood back to the lungs, which breathe out the CO2. The lungs breathe in more air and oxygen, and the heart pumps it to the body parts again.

Difference between arteries and veins Arteries go out AWAY from the heart, and veins go INto the heart.

Heart Diagram Follow along as we label the parts of the heart and learn the blood vessels leading in and out of it.
