Science and Engineering Section 1-4 Science and Engineering

What Is Technology? Technology is the products and processes that are designed to serve our needs. Refers to the tools and methods for creating these products and processes

How Does Science Relate to Technology? Engineering uses scientific knowledge to develop technologies. Engineers use science and math to create new technologies that serve human needs. Engineering- the process of creating technology

What is the Engineering Design Process? Engineering design process- the process engineers use to develop a new technology Step 1 ASK: Identifying and Researching a Need Step 2 IMAGINE: Developing Possible Solutions

What is the Engineering Design Process?, cont. Step 3 PLAN: Making a Prototype prototype-test model of a product Step 4 CREATE: Testing and Evaluating cost-benefit analysis- cost of doing something is worth benefit provided Step 5 IMPROVE: Modifying and Retesting the Solution

Communication Promote the technology to customers Communicate with the public through new releases or advertisements Publish details of the design process in journals

Technology and Society Technology provides solutions for many types of social, political, and economic needs.

Intended Benefits An intended benefit is the positive purpose for which a technology is designed to be used.

Unintended Consequences Unintended consequences are uses or results that engineers do not purposely include in the design of products. Unintended consequences can be beneficial and/or have a negative impact on society.

Bioengineering Bioengineering- the application of engineering to living things, such as humans and plants Bioengineers and scientists study problems that occur in living organisms and their environments. They use their skills, knowledge, and technology to develop solutions to these problems.

Assistive Bioengineering Assistive bioengineering- engineering that results in a product or process that helps living organisms but does not change them permanently Examples: hearing aid, eyeglasses, prosthetic limbs, sterilized bandages

Adaptive Bioengineering Adaptive bioengineering- engineering that results in a product or process that changes living organisms Examples: cochlear implant, artificial heart
