Ben Chonzie By Elena Cooke

Morning On Sunday 25th August, me, my parents and my brother Danny decided to go up a mountain. We got up, had some toast, packed lunch, got our jackets on and scrambled into the car.

The drive We left Glasgow and drove for about an hour and a half and got lost a couple of times but finally we got to the bottom of the mountain. We saw some ducklings, chickens, a cat on a car and even a tortoise in a box!

Ben Chonzie facts Ben Chonzie is a Munro, a mountain in Scotland over 3000 feet. There are 284 Munros. Ben Chonzie is 910 metres high. Ben Chonzie is near Perth in Scotland.

The walk on the flat We walked past bushes, trees, streams and lots of sheep. We went through and over gates. We walked past a large dam. Suddenly, I realised that the ground was about to get a whole lot steeper.

The very steep part Very slowly, we walked up. It was very tiring. There were hardly any trees on the mountain. Every time I saw a bend I thought it was going to get less steep but it didn`t for ages. Finally, just when I was about to collapse, we were on the ridge.

The ridge All I could see was the marshy ground and the sky. It wasn`t misty which is unusual for a mountain. I was so relieved because it was flat now and the steep part had been very tiring. My mum and I could see two small dots. They were my dad and Danny who were far ahead of us. There were lots of rusty metal poles on the ridge which might have once made a fence.

The final step We walked for about half an hour, then we caught up with my dad and Danny. We passed lots of cairns. A cairn is a pile of rocks to guide you the way. Normally, a cairn is only on the top of a mountain. 15 minutes later, we saw a very large cairn signifying the top.

The top At the top, it was a wee bit colder. It was good to have a sit down since my legs were so tired. Danny and I sat in the cairn and had a snack.

The way down The way down was a lot quicker. We only followed the path a wee bit. We ran through the heather and Danny kept falling over. Sometimes, we had to walk down the path sideways because it was so steep. At one point, my dad went on a different way to us and we had to wait for ages at the dam to collect him. Then we walked back to the car and drove off. I felt a sense of achievement because that was my third Munro after Ben Lomond and Meall nan Tarmachan.

Fish and chips We drove for a bit and knew that there was not much in the fridge for tea so we decided to go and get some fish and chips. We sat on a nice bench with flowers around it in a small village. I had a coke as well. It was a very tasty treat.

Back home ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ We finished our fish and chips and drove home. I immediately got into bed and fell asleep. I was exhausted.
