Writing Preparation for PTA Week 3 Article & Review
Writing in general A text needs : An introduction Part of the text where you explain to the reader what you’re writing about. A body (usually 3 paragraphs) Part of the text where you write the actual content of your text. This is the place where you give information or try to prove a point. A conclusion Part of the text where you summarise what you’ve written in the body and draw a conclusion/answer a question. Punctuation (commas, full stops, capital letters etc.) Proper Word Order (Subject + Verb + Object + Place + Time)
Paragraphs A text uses paragraphs, so you can talk about multiple subjects in one text without it getting confusing. One paragraph usually explains one basic idea or a few ideas about the same topic. You start a new paragraphs when you talk about a new idea/point/part; you want to contrast a point/idea already made The introduction and conclusion are always a separate paragraph.
Paragraphs In this … I will talk about … Introduction idea/point 1 In this article I will explain why phones shouldn’t be allowed in school Body idea/point 1 It’s a distraction idea/point 2 It can be used to cheat idea/point 3 It’s impersonal Conclusion So, ….. I believe phones shouldn’t be allowed because it’s a distraction, can be used to cheat and it’s impersonal.
Linking Words A text is easier to understand if it is one text with a good structure rather than loose bits of information. To add structure and link paragraphs together, we use linking words. On this website, you can find a lot of linking words in different catergories. If you want examples of how to use them, Google it or ask your teacher.
Important to keep in mind You should assume that your reader knows nothing about your subject, so always explain fully. Your reader can’t see what’s going on in your head, so be precise. Don’t just write your text. Read it, check it, change bits if necessary.
The Assignment There are a lot of different types of texts. For this assignment you write an article or a review. Both assignments have something to do with Good Mythical Morning and you get time to prepare and research for both assignments in class.
Review In a review, you give your opinion on something. You try to give some general information about the thing you’re reviewing and state your opinion. For this assignment, you can write about one specific episode of GMM or GMM as a whole. As preparation, you watch one or more episodes, look up who worked on it, write down what you liked, write down what you didn’t like etc.
Review (2) Your review includes: A title (optional) An introduction, which explains what you’re reviewing A body, which explains things like what is GMM, who work on it, what did you like, what didn’t you like etc. A conclusion, which summarises your opinion and gives advice to the reader (i.e. Go watch it, don’t watch it, watch it if you like … etc.)
Article In an article, you write an informative text, explaining something about a subject. This is not about your opinion, but about facts. For this assignment, you write an article about a GMM-worthy subject that their crew could use a a base for a new episode. As preparation, you research a subject of choice.
Article (2) Your article includes: A title An introduction, which explains the subject of your article A body, which explains your subject in detail (preferably with “evidence”) A conclusion, which summarises your subject and briefly gives your opinion on the subject.
What to bring to the PTA? You can bring a Dutch-English and English-Dutch dictionary. You can bring one piece of A4 paper with information you can use while writing. You can write down dates, facts, names, data etc. This piece of paper will be checked and you cannot write your article/review in advance. If you want an example of a review or an article, ask your teacher.
What to write about? For the review it is quite simple to think of a subject because it has to be GMM or a GMM video. For the article however, you can choose everything and I get that that might be difficult. Here are some ideas from certain categories. Note: You don’t have to choose one of these subjects, but they are subjects I approve and that might be interesting.
