What is a compound fracture? A compound fracture is an injury in which a broken bone pierces the skin, causing a risk of infection. Also known as an open fracture. This is the most serious type of fracture. Before surgery to reduce pain you can do an ice massage, realignment, and stabilize where the injury has occurred. Treatment: These fractures usually require urgent surgery to clean the area of the injury. Because of the break in the skin, debris and infection can travel to the fracture location, and can lead to a high rate of infection in the bone. Complications: Often requires multiples surgeries, prolonged antibiotic treatment, and long term problems.
