©2012, TESCCC

The United States Today Refer to the inset and back to the relief map to help students recognize the actual location of Alaska and Hawaii. Add the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River, and the Great Lakes to your map. ©2012, TESCCC

Before the French and Indian War (1754) Students recall claims by European countries during colonial times. ©2012, TESCCC

The United States Today Students locate, shade, and label the states that were part of the original 13 colonies. Note the location of the Appalachian Mountains. How did this physical barrier affect settlement patterns? What political factors affected settlement patterns? (British law prohibited settlement west of the Appalachians. After American Revolution With the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution, Great Britain ceded lands to the Mississippi River to the new United States. The territory northwest of the Ohio River became known as the Northwest Territory, which later became the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Add to your map the states whose land was added after the American Revolution. The land for what states were part of the United States after the Treaty of Paris? (brown states). ©2012, TESCCC

Louisiana Purchase The land included would have been described as the land in the western watershed of the Mississippi River (including the Missouri and Arkansas rivers). The land in the eastern watershed of the Mississippi River (including the Ohio River) had been ceded to Great Britain after the French and Indian War, and to the United States after the American Revolution. ©2012, TESCCC
