After American Revolution With the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution, Great Britain ceded lands to the Mississippi River to the new United States. The territory northwest of the Ohio River became known as the Northwest Territory, which later became the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
