What do numbers mean? Counting Words Counting Objects Counting On Fluency with the counting sequence Counting Objects One-to-one correspondence between words and objects What does How many? mean? Counting On Start counting mid-stream
What does addition mean? Adding to There are some and some more come We have two apples at home. If we buy three more at the store, how many will we have? (2 + 3 = ?) Putting together There are groups; what happens when they combine? We have two red apples and three green apples. How many apples do we have altogether? (2 + 3 = ?) You have ten flowers. If six are for grandma, how many are for mom? (10 = 6 + ?)
What does subtraction mean? Taking from There are some and then some go away You have five soccer balls. Dad gave some away and now you have two soccer balls. How many balls did Dad give away? Taking apart There are groups; what happens when they separate? There are six toy cars. Four are red and the rest are blue. How many cars are blue? (6 – 4 = ?)
