Helping Children Make Sense of Numbers Math in Context for Primary Grades Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. Director of Mathematics & Science ETA hand2mind smoore@hand2mind.com

Session Organization Where’s the math? Connecting to the real world Connecting to parents/families/community

Where’s the Math? What do numbers mean? What does addition mean? Counting & Cardinality What does addition mean? Adding to or Putting together What does subtraction mean? Taking from or Taking apart

What do numbers mean? Counting Words Counting Objects Counting On Fluency with the counting sequence Counting Objects One-to-one correspondence between words and objects What does How many? mean? Counting On Start counting mid-stream

What does addition mean? Adding to There are some and some more come We have two apples at home. If we buy three more at the store, how many will we have? (2 + 3 = ?) Putting together There are groups; what happens when they combine? We have two red apples and three green apples. How many apples do we have altogether? (2 + 3 = ?) You have ten flowers. If six are for grandma, how many are for mom? (10 = 6 + ?)

What does subtraction mean? Taking from There are some and then some go away You have five soccer balls. Dad gave some away and now you have two soccer balls. How many balls did Dad give away? Taking apart There are groups; what happens when they separate? There are six toy cars. Four are red and the rest are blue. How many cars are blue? (6 – 4 = ?)

What can families do? Help students develop fluency with counting words and counting objects by practice “Can you count these? How many are there?” Identify situations at home where you are adding/subtracting While playing While cooking While shopping While cleaning up
