Topic Objectives Lessons 1-3 Describes the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and how physical change of state occurs when heat/pressure is added or removed Identifies the difference between solids, liquids and gases at the particle (atomic) level Describe what we see in regards to energy changes when changes of state occur (qualitative) Draw and label a simple (Dalton) atomic model List and describe the differences between elements and compounds, Name the chemical symbols and formula for common elements and compoundsH2, Cl2, H2O, CH4, N2, C2H4, CH3OH and CO2   State that matter cannot be created or destroyed (conservation of mass) and understand that this is used to balance chemical reactions and predict products

States of Matter Key words: dilos, udliiq, sag, zengefri intpo All students will be able to label the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) using diagrams of the particle theory of matter – grade C Most students will be able to describe how physical change of state occurs when heat/pressure is added or removed using particle theory - B Some students will be able to explain what we see in regards to energy changes when changes of state occur (qualitative) -A

Starter Grade C – Match up 5 key words to definitions In this task you will have to complete page 3 from your class booklet. Grade C – Match up 5 key words to definitions Grade B – Match up 10 key words to definitions Grade A – Match up 15 key words to definitions

Changing State Activity When objects undergo changes of state we use the words you have just matched up to describe what is happening in each process. TASK Using the bottom of page 3 complete the changes of state between ice water and water vapour. Copy and complete the diagram below

Particle Theory Substances can exist in three forms: solid, liquid and gas. These are the states of matter. In each state, the particles are arranged differently, and move differently. Particles are close together but can move past each other Fixed Volume Can Change Shape Small Gaps Particles are spread out and move fast in random directions Lots of gaps Will move into empty spaces Particles are very close together Fixed Shape No Gaps

Changing state and energy levels Simulation TASK Grade C - Describe what is happening in the simulation when we add heat or pressure to the substance Grade B- Explain what is happening in the simulation when we add heat or pressure to the substance

Expanding & Contracting TASK Read page 4 in your class booklet. Grade C - complete the exercise on contracting and expanding materials. Grade B - As above and describe and explain a use of expansion. Grade A – As above and link your new knowledge of expansion and contraction to explain the following: Metal parts can be fitted together without welding using shrink fitting. The animation shows how this works. Click ME!

Research Homework Poster - distillation apparatus – label and discuss what happens at the molecular level when ice turns to water and then to steam and back to water. Grade C – Label and draw a basic distillation experiment Grade B – Explain each stage of the distillation experiment Grade A – Link each stage of the distillation experiment to particle theory
