Procedures and radiotelephony phraseology Section 2 “ATS phraseology” Lecture 5 Lazorenko

CONTENTS OF THE LECTURE En-route operations. Identification; Position reporting; Climb and descent; Short cut; CB avoidance; Approach to destination. Lazorenko

Identification Lazorenko

Identification Radar contact. The situation which exists when the radar position of a particular aircraft is seen and identified on a radar display. Radar identification. The situation which exists when the radar position of a particular aircraft is seen on a radar display and positively identified by the air traffic controller. Radar contact = PSR information (target is observed on a radar screen) Identified = SSR information/flight data concerning aircraft (Squawk, height, call sign… etc.) Lazorenko

Position reporting Lazorenko 5

Position reporting Position reports shall be made when over, or as soon as possible after passing, each designated compulsory reporting point. Additional reports over other points may be requested by the appropriate air traffic services unit when so required for air traffic services purposes. The position reports shall contain the following elements of information: 1) Aircraft identification 2) Position 3) Time 4) Flight level or altitude 5) Next position and time over 6) Ensuing significant point. Position reporting may be omitted from position reports transmitted by radiotelephony. 6 Lazorenko

Position reporting phraseology NEXT REPORT AT GULON; OMIT POSITION REPORTS [UNTIL GULON]; REPORT PASSING GULON; RESUME POSITION REPORTING. To request a report at a specified place REPORT PASSING 270° RADIAL OL VOR; RALOS OL NIKOD GULON OL 7 Lazorenko

Climb and descent Lazorenko 8

Climb/Descent CLIMB TO/ DESCEND TO FL/ ALTITUDE (240) 1. TO REACH FL 200 BY RALOS; 2. REPORT LEAVING (REACHING/PASSING) FL 180; 3. AT 7 M/S (2000 FT./MIN); STOP CLIMB AT FL180 CONTINUE CLIMB TO FL240 EXPEDITE CLIMB [UNTIL PASSING FL180] WHEN READY CLIMB TO FL 240 EXPECT DESCENT AT 25 DESCEND IMMEDIATELY DESCEND AFTER PASSING KUROS DESCEND AT KUROS to require action when convenient DESCEND WHEN READY TO BE AT FL 180 20 KM TO BR 9 Lazorenko

Short cut Lazorenko 10

Short cut P: …REQUEST SHORT CUT (DIRECT) FROM OL NIKOD GULON RALOS BARKI 2 P: …REQUEST SHORT CUT (DIRECT) FROM PRESENT POSITION TO GULON BARKI TO GULON or P: REQUEST ANY SHORT CUT C: CLEARED SHORT CUT (PROCEED) DIRECT TO GULON MAINTAIN FL 290 1 11 Lazorenko

CB avoidance Lazorenko 12

CB avoidance C: …BE INFORMED CB NORTH-WEST OF RALOS OVER RALOS 1 3 OL NIKOD 2 GULON RALOS BARKI C: …BE INFORMED CB NORTH-WEST OF RALOS OVER RALOS BETWEEN OL AND NIKOD BASE OF CLOUDS AT ALTITUDE 2000FT. TOP OF CLOUDS AT FL260, MOVING EAST 45 KM/HOUR, I RECOMMEND YOU TO AVOID ON YOUR RADAR…or I RECOMMEND YOU TO AVOID SOUTH OF ROUTE 20 KM (for all next traffic) P: WEATHER INFORMATION RECEIVED CLEARED TO AVOID ON OUR RADAR…or CLEARED TO AVOID SOUTH OF ROUTE 20 KM 13 Lazorenko

Approach to destination Lazorenko 14

Approach While approach descending aircraft shall be provided with transition level and QNH to be installed. Transition level directly depends on the atmospheric pressure. In Ukraine there is a table of ratio between transition level and atmospheric pressure. According to this table: QNH <994 hPa – Flight level 130 QNH from 995 to 1012 hPa - Flight level 120 QNH > 1013 hPa - Flight level 110 C: …Transition level 120 QNH 996 descent to Altitude 5000 ft. [Expect ILS approach runway 26R] P: …Transition level 120 QNH 996 descending to altitude 5000 ft. [Expecting ILS approach runway 26R] 15 Lazorenko

Questions What is the difference between radar contact and radar identification process? What are information elements of position report? How to use “RADIAL”? What is the structure of phraseology for climb and descend procedures? Describe short-cut procedure and give few examples of phraseology. Describe CB avoidance procedure and give few examples of phraseology. How to choose the correct transition level? Give examples of phraseology for arriving aircraft. Lazorenko
