2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago The 2nd workshop on SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization for the ILC C.M. Ginsburg and M. Champion with acknowledgement to Jim Kerby 24 July 2011 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago Goals of the Workshop We want to develop the industrial model that would be the best for the cavity and cryomodule production for the ILC, and look forward to cost reduction embodied by new processes or manufacturing techniques This includes: The project-industry relationship Quality control Scale-up to production quantity Cost--effective manufacturing 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago Thank You! Many thanks to everyone for the informative presentations, comments, insights And your candid comments and discussion The success of the cavity technology and industrialization effort relies on integrating our efforts 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago ILC/GDE model 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago Some issues The aim: The ILC is a global project Industry equally must be distributed around the world Multiple cavity vendors strongly desirable 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

Some issues: industrialization Advances in industrialization studies since the 1st workshop in Kyoto “factory” has to be owned/leased by government, because the ILC is a project and not a business (what to do at the end of the project) Industrialization studies in Japan have shown the value in having this done at a hub lab Many companies showed that they could achieve ILC-type scale up Note that this in some cases requires using entire company throughput Companies see SRF as a growing industry Coming from different backgrounds and areas of expertise  SRF is an enabling technology, expect to be similar to example of superconducting wire for magnets – expect mutual benefit Factory should be close to hub laboratory because of difficulty to find skilled personnel Example of large local skilled workforce A great deal of understanding has come from industrialization associated with XFEL as well 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago Some issues In many cases, specification reasoning to industry is not clear We have come a long way on this… especially thanks to XFEL Example of Nb sheet specs Example of large-grain material Build-to-print is not really build-to-print, because this is not really production yet We also do not know all of the key points, but we know what works! In many cases, information from industry about how to effectively go after the most important specs is also not clear Which are the cost drivers for the niobium sheets, and where can we reduce the costs, e.g., round sheets. What is most valuable to go after? 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago

2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago Summary Plenty of work to go! Please email me (ginsburg@fnal.gov) with your comments and clarifications, I will (try to) include them in a summary to be posted. 24 July 2011 Ginsburg/Champion 2nd SCRF Cavity Technology and Industrialization Workshop / Chicago
