Why pediatrician? I am very interested in Medicine and working in this field I absolutely love kids and being able to help people, so working with kids and being able to help them is my dream job. This field is steadily growing each year

History 1802 The first pediatric hospital in the Western world is generally accepted to be the Hôpital des Enfants Malades, the Hospital for Sick Children in English, which opened in 1802 in Paris. 1855 The first hospital for children in the United States was opened in Philadelphia in 1855. early 18th century The major focus of early pediatrics was the treatment of infectious diseases that affected children. Thomas Sydenham in Britain had led the way with the first accurate descriptions of measles, scarlet fever, and other diseases in the 17th century.

Role/Responsibility As a pediatrician, your main occupational tasks involve providing medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults examining, diagnosing, and treating children with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. administer the many immunizations that are available to protect children from diseases such as hepatitis B, diphtheria, polio, measles, and the mumps.

Where can you find a pediatrician? Pediatricians are located throughout the U.S and all throughout the world. Work in a number of environments including- Hospitals Private practice offices Health maintenance organizations Community health centers Public health clinics Schools Government or Military

What do they do? Begin day performing rounds at the hospital Visits patients in the nursery and pediatric ward (takes vitals and checks status) Begins patients appointments Meets with staff (Nurse practitioners and other physicians) to discuss possible procedures that may need to be done Begins seeing patients, may sign forms and write prescriptions Typical day ends around 6-7, but they are on call

Education Earn a Bachelors Degree Graduate from medical school Earn a license Complete a pediatric residency, usually 3-7 years depending on specialization Consider earning board certification

Certification The requirements for a physician’s license vary by state, but include graduation from a medical school. Pediatricians must complete a residency program in pediatrics to qualify for a state license. Physicians who meet the state education and training requirements must pass a national examination to obtain a doctor’s license. Physicians may take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination.

Market According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are going to be 2.8 million jobs created in the next few years, a 26% increase. Pediatricians that are willing to work in rural, low income areas, have the best employment opportunities because these areas lack doctors.

Projected salary 10% $143,767 25% $166,091 50% $190,610 75% $227,869 90% $261,792 Pediatricians usually make around $190,610 which is the median salary.

Student Organizations If you’re looking to go into pediatrics there is an Organization called the Pediatrics Special Interest group through the college of medicine. Also there is the Pre-Medical and Osteopathic Organization
