Why do we have sets? The primary function of a set is to provide the audience with context for the play. Sets can be realistic- Audience can be immersed in the scene/world of the play Sets can be abstract and/or symbolic- Can create mood or tone Sets can also be a mix of the two. Never be limited by one or the other. Shakespeare would sometimes use one piece on the stage to represent the entire set, props, etc.

Matilda Set

What does a set designer do? Create a concept that aligns with the director’s vision. Must take into account audience demographic (ex. Age) Design, plan, organize the building of sets. This can involve hiring the contractors/builders or how you will build it yourself. The set designer must also work with the lighting, sound, and costume designers. All of these jobs work in response to one another.

The use of models: Helps when choosing the scale of the set pieces and props. Helps you choose a color palette on a small scale. Less expensive than building full scale models that may not work, but show more detail than a drawing.
