African Society The education of children in Africa was the responsibility of the family and the village. Children would learn: The history of their people Basic skills they would use as adults Stories that were meant to give a lesson about life Proverbs that supported the lessons about life

Traditional African Religions African religion – Read page 136 in textbook provided rules for living protected people from harm guaranteed success in life. Traditional African religions shared the belief in 1. A single creator god and lesser gods, but these beliefs varied across the continent. Some West Africans believed god sent his son from heaven in a canoe. Once on Earth, the son created humans. In other religions, people believed that the supreme god had sons. Those sons were lesser gods. Some Africans believed that the creator god was on Earth but left because he was disappointed with human behavior. People would be forgiven by this god if they corrected their ways.
