Giovanni da Verrazano

Giovanni da Verrazano Introduction He was born in Tuscany, Italy near Florence, Italy in 1485. He passed away during about 1528 at the West Indies. As a child he lived in Lyons, France. He was known as one of the first Europeans to explore the coast of North America. He was a navigator who was the first European to sight New York When he was 18 – 21(years old), He lived in Florence and studied the classics, higher mathematics, and navigation

Giovanni da Verrazano Route of Expedition In 1523, Francis I agreed to give Verrazano 2 ships and discover the westward passage to Asia. His ship's name was La Dauphine. March 1st, 1524 he reached Cape Fear, North Carolina. He thought he saw the Pacific Ocean, but he had actually found the Pamlico Sound which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Giovanni reached America in 1525 while sailing under the French flag.

Giovanni da Verrazano Hardships Faced and Other Notable Occurrances He tried trading with the Wampanoag's and other tribes. Some of the tribes didn’t welcome him. In 1527 he was captured by the Spanish. In 1528 he was exploring Florida, the Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles when he anchored away from shore. He came in contact with the natives who weren’t pleasant to trade with him. They were cannibals so he got killed. In New York Bay, they named their bridge – Verrazano – Narrows Bridge after him. He discovered the Carolina Banks.
