Mr. Paul Egleston Sun Valley Mathematics Algebra 1B pegleston@pdsd.org

Algebra 1B Overview In this course, students will be exposed to a powerful set of mathematical tools called algebra. As a set of tools, algebra is the foundation of higher mathematics. In fact, future courses will build from what students learn here. The main focus of this class is to allow the students to strengthen their algebra skills so they may be successful in their mathematical future. They will investigate new situations, discover relationships, and figure out what strategies can be used to solve problems.

Course Materials Most work for first three quarters of the year with be paper/packet based Binder (which is kept in the classroom) Folder (to take papers home when appropriate) Pencil Graphing Calculator (Highly Recommended, but optional)

Homework Assigned most nights Each assignment worth 4 points Will be only a few problems to practice the current topic Each assignment worth 4 points Graded for completion and effort HOMEWORK HOMEWORK HOMEWORK!!!!   This course relies on students completing their homework. Concepts are discovered in class during team activities and reinforced during the homework assignments. Students who do not complete the homework often do worse on tests and quizzes.

Grading Policy Individual Tests and Quizzes 60% Quizzes throughout each chapter Individual test one week after chapter completion Constructed Response Questions 10% Extra Practice/Classwork 10% Pre and Post Tests for each topic 10% Vocabulary Dictionary 5% Homework 5%

Up for a Challenge? Late one evening, four hikers find themselves at a rope bridge spanning a wide river. The bridge is not very secure and can hold only two people at a time. Since it is quite dark, a flashlight is needed to cross the bridge and only one hiker had brought his. One of the hikers can cross the bridge in one minute, another in two minutes, another in five minutes and the fourth in ten minutes. When two people cross, they can only walk as fast as the slower of the two hikers. How can they all cross the bridge in 17 minutes? No, they cannot throw the flashlight across the river.
