Chapter 1: What is NFE? European Youth Forum and NFE - The EYF has drawn on various definitions of formal and informal learning elaborated by UNESCO. - has come to a consensus on the following common understanding: - formal education: typically provided by formal Ed. institutions, hierarchically structured; leads to certification, - NFE: organized educational process; takes place alongside the mainstream systems of E.T and does not typically lead to certification -Informal education: happens less consciously 13 September 201813 September 2018

- NFE: gives young people the possibility to develop values, skills and competencies - Those skills/soft skills include a wide range of competencies: interpersonal, team, organizational and conflict management, intercultural awareness, leadership, planning, organizing, coordination and practical problem solving skills, teamwork, self-confidence, discipline and responsibility - What is special about NFE is that individuals, participants are the actors actively involved in the education/learning process. - The methods being used aim at giving young people the tools to further develop their skills and attitudes. 13 September 201813 September 2018

The Council of European Way “Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten” B. F. Skinner (p.10) Informal Education: Formal Education: Non-formal Education: Formal, non-formal and informal education are complementary and mutually reinforcing elements of a lifelong learning process. Informal education refers to the lifelong process, whereby every individual acquires attitudes, values, skills and knowledge from the educational influences and resources in his or her own environment and from daily experience (family, neighbors, marketplace, library, mass media, work, play, etc.). Formal education refers to the structured education system that runs from primary school to university, and includes specialized programs for technical and professional training. Non-formal education refers to any planned program of personal and social education for young people designed to improve a range of skills and competencies, outside the formal educational curriculum. 13 September 2018

NFE as practiced by many youth organizations and groups is: * voluntary; * accessible to everyone (ideally); * an organized process with educational objectives; * participatory and learner-centered; * about learning life skills and preparing for active citizenship; * based on involving both individual and group learning with a collective approach; * holistic and process-oriented; * based on experience and action, and starts from the needs of the participants. Informal education refers to the lifelong process, whereby every individual acquires attitudes, values, skills and knowledge from the educational influences and resources in his or her own environment and from daily experience (family, neighbors, marketplace, library, mass media, work, play, etc.). Formal education refers to the structured education system that runs from primary school to university, and includes specialized programs for technical and professional training. Non-formal education refers to any planned program of personal and social education for young people designed to improve a range of skills and competencies, outside the formal educational curriculum. 13 September 2018

European Union way - The need for lifelong and life-wide learning has revealed over the past few years that the necessary skills can be acquired through learning in formal, informal and non-formal contexts. Non-formal learning is typically undervalued as not being “real” learning. - We learn in formal settings and informal settings. - Young people take part in a wide range of activities outside mainstream education systems. - The advantage of NFL lies mainly in its voluntary and often self organized nature, its flexibility, possibilities of participation, the “right to make mistakes”, the closer link to young people’s interests and aspirations.
