Why Open Geographic Data? Geographic information is expensive More flexible and efficient Promotes economic growth More often up to date and available

Volunteer Geographic Information Crowdsourcing of data Addition of new data Updating outdated data Allows improvement to the quality of data sets

OpenStreetMap An online mapping tool with free and open data Data can be created or modified by volunteers

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) Organization which organizes online mapping tasks for humanitarian relief efforts Uses an online task manager for volunteers Humanitarian organizations can request a new project to add data to OpenStreetMap

The MapGive Initiative An initiative within the US Department of State’s Humanitarian Information Unit (HIU) Its mission is to make it easy for new volunteers to learn to map and get involved in online tasks. mapgive.state.gov

Imagery to the Crowd (IttC) Publishes high-resolution satellite imagery to the public and humanitarian organizations In preparation and for response to humanitarian emergencies worldwide Allows volunteers to use the imagery to map in OpenStreetMap Addresses significant data gaps for humanitarian and development needs
